New Morrisons store opens at Abbey Quay in Barking, as community moves into striking riverside scheme

The spectacular six-acre riverside village of Abbey Quay in Barking, developed by award-winning new homes developer Weston Homes, is coming to life; a new 2,550 sq.ft. Morrisons store has now opened to serve the local community.

Officially opened on Thursday 6th June by Councillor Darren Rodwell, Leader of the London Borough of Barking & Dagenham, and Bob Weston, Chairman of Weston Homes, the new store is being managed by successful local business owner Mehmet Boztepe, who owns several regional stores. It will be run by a team of 7 local staff, with roles for cashiers and shop assistants now available for applications.

The new Morrisons store is the first commercial unit to open at the riverside scheme and will be open Monday to Saturday each week from 7am to 11pm, and from 8am to 10pm every Sunday. It will provide essential groceries, hot pastries, meal deals, pre-packaged fish and meat products, a coffee machine and Oyster and National Lottery terminals. Located on the corner of London Road and Abbey Road, it is the only Morrisons store in the area, with the nearest being over 5 miles away in Canary Wharf.

Abbey Quay offers an exciting collection of 1,089 mixed tenure one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments set in striking contemporary buildings, ranging from seven to 29 storeys. These new homes all have their own private balcony or terrace. Since its initial launch, Phase 1 has sold out and Phase 2 is in high demand. Over 60% of the current phase of apartments have sold, with a mixture of Discount Market Sale (DMS), Shared Ownership and full market value homes available.

Alongside the new homes is 22,281 sq ft of commercial and leisure space which is planned to include a new pavilion restaurant, local shops, cafés, gymnasium and community hub.

Store owner Mehmet Boztepe has owned and managed convenience stores for the last seven years, with his first store on Abbey Road, Barking, close by to the new Morrisons.

Mehmet Boztepe, owner of Morrisons (Abbey Quay) says: “Over the past few years I’ve seen Barking really transform and today it is such an up-and-coming place to be. The Abbey Quay development is encouraging people to move into this vibrant community. It is a privilege to open this Morrisons store, there is nothing comparable in the area for our local residents who want convenience on their doorstep. I look forward to welcoming our first customers and getting to know them!”

Bob Weston, Chairman of Weston Homes says: “We are delighted with the opening of this new Morrisons store for Abbey Quay residents and the surrounding community. When planning a large residential development, the provision of amenities is essential, allowing people to live local and make the most of their new homes.”

The borough of Barking and Dagenham is one of East London’s most up-and-coming areas, making it an exciting place to invest. Undergoing a £2 billion regeneration project, there are plans to create 25,000 new jobs in the borough with 50,000 new homes planned over the next 20 years. Barking and Dagenham has a current population of 218,000, with a projected population growth of 13% over the next 10 years. Between 2015 and 2019 there was a 17% increase in people moving to Barking, with around 20% of those people aged between 25 and 29.

Providing riverside living at its very best, Abbey Quay has been masterplanned to provide a new urban village for Barking. Abbey Quay directly overlooks the River Roding, a tributary of the River Thames, and is bordered by London Road and Abbey Road, overlooking Abbey Green park, just a short walk from Barking’s mainline and London underground station.
