An archaeological study conducted on the outskirts of Bury St Edmunds uncovered evidence of both bronze age activity and Roman coins from the first and second centuries. This proved the town’s historic origins and placed it on the map as one of the oldest towns in England.
After the Romans, in 633, Sigebert, King of the East Angles, founded a monastery in Bury St Edmunds which the town began to grow around. By the 12th century, the 4,000 strong town was flourishing as a cloth making town with a large woollen trade. Henry III, Henry IV and James I granted fayres in the town centre, one of which, The Bury Christmas Fayre, still exists today.
