Hollywood Heads To Denham As Weston Homes Unveils Ultimate Tribute To Stanley Kubrick

Leading residential developer Weston Homes paid homage to the late Stanley Kubrick by naming a road after the celebrated Hollywood director within its new landmark development The Denham Film Studios.

On Wednesday 24 January 2018, Weston Homes officially unveiled Stanley Kubrick Road at a glittering reception at the studios which front onto the North Orbital road in Denham. To mark the occasion, members of the Kubrick family, as well as VIPs from the world of film including Warner Bros. Studios, were in attendance.

The Denham Film Studios is currently being transformed into an outstanding £120 million Art Deco and movie inspired residential address. Providing 224 converted and newly built homes including 154 one, two and three bedroom apartments and 70 four and five bedroom family townhouses. The project is highly inclusive, with a wide range of private homes for sale, from one bed starter homes up to large five bedroom executive houses.

Stanley Kubrick is one of a number of prestigious directors who has extensive ties to the site. Founded in 1936 by film producer Alexander Korda as a movie-industry complex for making and producing films, Denham Film Studios became the scene of where numerous Oscar winning movies were made including Brief Encounter, Eyes Wide Shut and The Great Escape, as well as films from the Bond, Superman and Star Wars franchises. According to historians, Stanley Kubrick was a particular fan of the studios and would often have reels of his movies developed at the studios’ laboratories.

Bob Weston, Chairman of Weston Homes, said:

“We are delighted to pay tribute to the enduring legacy of this phenomenal director, who has such strong ties to The Denham Film Studios. Through his films, Stanley Kubrick has had a lasting impact on our culture and it is only fitting that we commemorate his work at the very site where so many of his movies were completed.

“The Denham Film Studios has played a central role in the history of Hollywood and British movie making, and now people have the chance to live in the very place Kubrick and many others created cinematic history.”

Katharina Kubrick, Stanley Kubrick’s daughter, said:

“This is a very exciting development. I’m sure dad would be happy and amused to know that people will be able to drive along a road named after him. I think that millennials and future generations who are unfamiliar with his movies may be inspired to seek out his films and become the next generation of Stanley Kubrick fans.”

Jan Harlan, Executive Producer and Stanley Kubrick’s brother-in-law, said:

“He was a New Yorker, but made almost all his films in London: Lolita, Dr. Strangelove, 2001: A Space Odyssey and all the Warner Bros. films that followed, either on UK locations or London studios – and at Denham for post-production and laboratory for Full Metal Jacket & Eyes Wide Shut. He would be both astonished and pleased having a road in Denham named after him.”

Nicki Adams, Worldwide Kubrick Estate Manager for Warner Bros, said:

“Stanley was part of the Warner Bros. family for over 28 years and we continue to have a special relationship with his family and his films. We don’t doubt that a road being named in his honour would have entertained him. It is wonderful to know that nearly 20 years after his last film Kubrick is still current and relevant”.

Visitors to The Denham Film Studios will immediately notice Stanley Kubrick Road as its impressive signage will greet them upon entry into the studios, with the road snaking around the entire studio development. Homes along Stanley Kubrick Road include the landmark building Korda House which has 49 apartments.

As part of this prestigious event, Weston Homes also unveiled a new James Bond themed show home at The Denham Film Studios, which stands on the newly-named Stanley Kubrick Road.

The 1,560-sq.ft. four bedroom show home includes James Bond themed bedrooms and bathrooms and entertaining spaces with limited edition James Bond prints, memorabilia and gadgets. The 007 pad also includes a Blofeld style garden chair, a James Bond ‘shaken not stirred’ cocktail bar in the living room and a vintage Bond Aston Martin was parked in the driveway for the launch event*.

The Denham Film Studios front onto the North Orbital Road in Denham, providing easy commuter access into central London. The site consists of a new 10.7 acre (4.3 hectare) residential development designed around the original Grade II listed Art Deco film studio headquarters and laboratory building, built in 1936 and designed by Walter Gropius for film producer and studio founder Alexander Korda.

The film studios and laboratory operated between 1936 and 2014 and the new residential development includes the retained and restored Art Deco cinema, where famous movies were first screened to their directors, alongside the Art Deco Actor’s Bar and a community hall. Residents will also feel like a VIP with access to the on-site concierge available seven days a week. The new homes are designed around garden squares, landscaped grounds, rill water features and private gardens, with the development surrounded by mature woodland.

Reflecting the film studio history of the site, there will be movie themed artwork throughout the development. The Actor’s Bar and communal corridors of the apartment buildings feature framed movie posters of the films made at the studios whilst the grounds will feature large format plates of glass (1.6m high by 4m long), etched with scenes from movies produced at the film studios. The glass will be backlit so that they can be illuminated at night.

The buildings and streets within the development are to be named after the movies, film directors and actors/actresses who worked at the film studios. As well as Stanley Kubrick Road, further famous street names will include Albert Broccoli Road, Celia Johnson Close, Greer Garson Road and Noel Coward Avenue.

Since the development’s launch earlier this year, more than 65% of the development’s first phase of apartments has sold, with purchasers eager to own their very own slice of movie history.
