Leading housebuilder Weston Homes joined forces with St Mary’s RC Primary School to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, when Year 5 pupils were invited to bury a time capsule at the award-winning King’s Island development in Uxbridge.
The Year 5 students and teachers were joined at King’s Island by The Deputy Mayor of Hillingdon, Cllr Allan Kauffman, and Deputy Mayoress, Mrs Lynne Kauffman.
The children filled the time capsule with project material on the history of the town of Uxbridge and The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, as well as their hopes for the future. The children put their items into brown sealable bags and then filled them will bead bags which help to stop erosion, water and air damage to the items.
The bags were then placed into the time capsule, which was buried in the ground, before a granite plaque was cemented over the spot to mark the event on the docks of the development. Weston Homes also included their latest annual report which summaries the company and their developments, and a separate brochure of King’s Island in the time capsule.
Teachers and pupils were also joined by dignitaries from Hillingdon Council and given a tour around the gated, private island development, which is surrounded by the Grand Union Canal and River Colne.

“The time capsule will serve as a fitting reminder for generations to come of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee year, as well as marking this important new chapter for King’s Island. The site boasts a fascinating history, having been the site of a flour mill which proudly served the local population and beyond for centuries.
“I hope its transformation into a high quality homes for local people, as well as the sensitive restoration of the old mill building and the dock that used to serve it and two houses Mill House and Kings Hill Cottage, will leave a legacy local people can continue to be equally proud of for centuries to come.”
Marie Duhig, Year 5 teacher at St Mary’s RC Primary School said: “This was a great experience for the children who relished attending King’s Island. It is exciting that future generations could discover what the children have written and serves as a memento of this occasion.
“We are very grateful for Weston Homes for giving us this opportunity and it was a very enjoyable day for the children.”
King’s Island was launched in March 2011 on the former William King Flour Mill site, which had been derelict for a number of years, and is a development of 24 three and four-bedroom conversion and new build family houses and 127 one and two bedroom conversion and new build apartments and penthouses.
Work has been rapidly progressing since its launch with over two thirds of the homes now built and over 60% sold. Work is currently taking place on building the apartments and King’s Island is expected to be complete by the end of the year.
