TABLETOP DRESSING

Make the dining table a seasonal statement with a long, linen table runner in a rich shade of spice. Find custom-cut lengths of stonewashed linen in luscious shades of cinnamon, saffron and sage, a 41cm-wide length for a 140cm length table, £30.49, on Etsy.com. Add a stand-out centrepiece with an outsize earthenware bowl or platter, and fill to overflowing with bright oranges or baby pumpkins. If you have faux flowers, change them to suit the season. Fill an apothecary jar with hedgerow berries or pussy willow stems, real or fake

*For tabletop inspiration check out John Lewis’s new collaboration with Collagerie, the cult lifestyle store co-founded with ex-Vogue stylists Lucinda Chambers and Serena Hood.

AMP UP THE LIGHT

When the clocks go back ramp up your lighting. Switch to a scarlet lampshade (B&Q have a good selection) for an accent of warm, bright colour or a poppy red ceramic lampbase and red-and-white Ikat shade from John Lewis X Collagerie, £85, is a great style statement. Lampshades are the smart way to introduce lively print and pattern into a room: one of the season’s best is Dunelm’s finely-pleated, leaf-green and cream printed shade that doubles for table or ceiling, £20. Another way of bringing in the light: reflect it from outside with a decorative wall mirror. Dunelm’s circular Remi wall mirror is framed with a prettily scalloped, sage-green fibreboard edge, 63 x 63cm, £55.
