Abbey Quay in Barking secured the gold title for Best Sustainable Development at the 2023 WhatHouse? Awards which celebrate residential developments across the UK.
Judges were impressed with the fabric-first construction process, which significantly reduces build time and thereby energy consumption, CO2 emissions and noise pollution, as well as the provision of cost-effective, low-carbon heating via the local combined heat and power plant.
The judges commented: “There are green and brown roofs throughout the scheme, with the homes themselves energy efficient and futureproofed and with plenty of natural daylight and photovoltaic roof panels.”
Judges also praised Abbey Quay for its commitment to supporting and enhancing biodiversity.
