Ashton Grove

Character, charm and history permeate from this unique and iconic location.

Founded in 1728 and built in 1887, Dunstable Grammar School was established by the Trustees of the Almshouse Charity created by the Will of Frances Ashton. The school originally opened with just 49 pupils in its first year, but by 1917 the school had grown to 67 boarders and 100 day boys.

In 1896, a library was opened and dedicated to the memory of the 62 former pupils who gave their lives in the Boer War and the Second World War. In 1973, Dunstable Grammar School officially took on its middle school name and status, becoming Ashton Middle School. Over the course of its use, the school was modified and expanded, featuring a total of five buildings but the main school kept its grand and striking original façades.
