Government proposals to end the need for planning permission next month (April 2013) for converting commercial space into homes has been welcomed by leading developer Weston Homes, after a conversion it carried out in Hitchin sold out in just two weeks.
Weston Homes’ Lyon Court development, located on Walsworth Road close to Hitchin train station, saw huge demand from homebuyers impressed by its superb location and transport links, great design and superior fixtures and fittings across 35 stylish apartments. In addition the development provided eight much needed affordable homes managed by a local housing association.
Bob Weston, Chairman and Managing Director of Weston Homes, comments: “The complete sell-out of Lyon Court demonstrates just how much pent-up demand for housing exists, so converting uneconomic commercial buildings for residential use makes perfect sense.
“For too long many local authorities have been supporting the building of new commercial space at the expense of homes as they think it creates jobs. But if the demand is not there you cannot create it artificially just because you think it’s a good idea, and at a time when the country is so desperately short of new homes the Government’s proposals are a sign of common sense.”
By the Government’s own estimation, in order to meet the needs of a growing population 300,000 new homes a year need to be built in the UK. But currently only a third of that amount is being achieved at an average of 100,000.
Former offices often make for great homes as they have large floor spaces and additional features which add character. At Lyon court high ceilings, large rooms, an impressive lobby and ornate metalwork in a curved central staircase all combine to create contemporary homes designed with style and comfort in mind.
Hitchin is also one of the best connected commuter towns in Hertfordshire with a frequent train service to King’s Cross, reaching London in just 25 minutes. The next nearest Weston Homes development is Westbury Grove, in Letchworth, a converted former school with prices from £175,995.
