The oldest recorded town in Britain, Colchester has a history stretching back two thousand years. Captured by the Romans in AD43, the town became a fortress and then a civilian settlement before its temporary capture by Boudicca. Roman rule was to last for 400 Years.

The town has remained prosperous to this day, with a host of historic buildings dating back to medieval times.

Colchester is home to the University of Essex, one of the UK's leading academic institutions, which attracts students from around the world. There are also strong links to the military, which has a large garrison in the town.

The location is excellent for both local and national travel. City commuters have a direct link from Hythe station (0.5 miles away) and Colchester station (just over 2 miles away) to London Liverpool Street, with journey times from 50 minutes; international travellers can fly from Stansted, under 30 miles away. For road travellers, the A12 provides a fast route past Chelmsford to the M25 and on into London, or north to Ipswich.
